Agri-PV in Open Field Vineyard Cultivation | Kilkis, Greece

Brite Solar has completed an Agri-PV installation above open field grapevines at Makedonikoi Ampelones in Kilkis, Northern Greece. The system places semi-transparent solar panels directly above vine rows, allowing simultaneous clean energy generation and continued vineyard cultivation on the same land.

The installation uses two complementary panel models from the Brite Solar portfolio. The 111 BSG-300/54-F units contribute 33.3 kWp, while the 74 BSG-200/69-F units add a further 14.8 kWp, bringing the total installed capacity to 48.1 kWp. Full technical specifications for both panel models are available in the Brite Solar datasheets.

▪️ Agri-PV in Open Field | How It Works

Semi-transparent solar panels transmit a defined portion of sunlight through to the vine canopy while converting the remaining solar radiation into electricity. The grapevines continue to grow beneath the structure without interruption to cultivation practices.

Partial shading from the panels reduces peak heat stress on the crop during summer, lowers soil water evaporation, and offers a degree of protection from heavy rainfall and hail. Research on the social acceptance of agrivoltaic systems in vineyards confirms that dual land use is broadly supported by farmers and communities across Southern Europe. The structure is built for open field conditions, with a design lifetime exceeding 25 years.

▪️ Benefits of Agri-PV for Vineyards

▪️ Protection from excessive heat, intense radiation, and extreme weather events
▪️ Reduced water evaporation and improved irrigation efficiency across the vineyard
▪️ Dual land use: food production and clean energy generation from a single footprint
▪️ Long-term durability suited to the demands of commercial viticulture

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

▪️ What is Agri-PV in vineyard cultivation?
Agri-PV in a vineyard means installing solar panels above grapevine rows so that the same land produces both grapes and renewable electricity. Semi-transparent panels let natural light reach the vines while generating clean energy simultaneously.

▪️ How does shading from Agri-PV panels affect grapevines?
The panels provide partial shading that can reduce heat stress, limit excessive water loss from the soil, and protect the canopy from intense summer radiation. Transparency levels are calibrated to the specific light requirements of the crop and local climate.
